Silver stain of section of lung Pneumocystosis occurs in infants with immunity deficiency states, or older individuals receiving immunosuppressive therapy. Theorganisms are seen in the foamy exudate that fills the alveoli, (x 250)

Photo 2. The organism in lung smear. P. carinii is an opportunistic parasite that produces eight-nucleated cysts. Its taxonomic status is still undetermined but it is probably a protozoan. (Giemsa x600)
